Efficiency, Agility and Adaptability

  Unpredictability is inherent in emergency medicine. Patient volumes and staffing levels seem to have a perpetually inverse relationship with one another. On the rare occasions when they do align, throughput seems to face further challenges from variable degrees of efficiency outside of the department. 

Unfortunately, most of the current fads in efficiency design are drawn from the world of engineering and manufacturing. In our opinion, these methodologies assume a predictability of input and through put typical of the assembly line processes, and ignore the human element that lies at the heart of healthcare.

An efficiently run department demands an agile staff capable of adapting to the conditions dictated by the ever-changing cycle of events that drive emergency medicine.
